15 Best Dark Souls 3 Intelligence Scaling Weapons

Action RPGs can’t exist without weapons that vary in terms of design, cost, and of course, viability. The viability of a weapon in most RPGs usually comes down to basic statistics like its damage values, attack speed, and hitbox range. However, only bigger game developers can afford the luxury of sophisticating something as conventionally simple as their weapons system; this is the case with Dark Souls 3 and Intelligence Scaling Weapons.

FromSoftware, with every sequel of the Souls series, has always aspired to one-up themselves in many ways and have certainly delivered each time. One of their biggest focuses is diversifying the game so that it allows players to approach their masterpiece in their preferred ways. This is where the concept of “builds” comes to play, where you can shape your character in terms of stat allocation, equipment, and weapon choice to manifest a specific playstyle. And of course, this supports the game’s replayability as replaying even the entire game with a different build can feel vastly different and relatively fresh!

One standard build across Dark Souls 3 is the Intelligence build, often used by players fond of magic. It complements a cautious playstyle where you can fire powerful spells at your enemy from a comfortable distance in their moments of vulnerability. However, magic alone usually doesn’t win you fights – you’ll notice that close combat will quickly become your most glaring weakness due to punishably slow casting times. Therefore, players usually resolve this problem by integrating a weapon into their build, not just any weapon – one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3.

What is Intelligence In Dark Souls 3

Intelligence is one of the nine attributes your player is generated with when you start playing the game. It signifies the attribute required to cast sorceries and pyromancies. Consequently, you can imagine that dumping more points into intelligence will increase any spell’s potency (though pyromancy potency is also affected by the faith attribute). Moreover, your player’s magic defense, that is, resistance towards magic attacks, is also calculated based on this stat. Specifically speaking, for each point of intelligence, you receive 1.1 Magic Defense, 0.4 in all other defenses, and 0.2 in all resistances!

Soft and Hard caps

As with most attributes, Intelligence has a soft cap at 40. This means that the benefits you’ll get per level (as specified above) will be consistent till 40 points – after this, you will get less out of your stat per level. Furthermore, Intelligence has a hard cap at 99, which means that you barely get anything out of your stat per point at this level. Lastly, if you’re interested, you need 50 intelligence to use every available sorcery in the game.

How does Scaling work?

Parameter Bonus

Scaling, formally known as Parameter Bonus is an interesting mechanic in Dark Souls 3 that goes very well with the attributes system. It indicates the level of bonus damage one can do with a weapon, based on a particular attribute. In order of most to least effective, this rating can be S, A, B, C, D or E.

Bonus Damage

The weapon’s parameter bonus and base damage affect how effectively a weapon scales. As such, weapons with high scaling but low base damage are likely to get less bonus damage than those with more base damage and similar scaling. It is even possible that a weapon with a considerably worse parameter bonus gets more scaling due to having much higher base damage.

Exact Calculation

There are two main factors that go into calculating the bonus damage. Let’s analyze Intelligence for the sake of this guide. The first factor is your weapon’s scaling in a particular attribute:

  • S equates to 101% of said weapon’s base damage
  • A equates to 81% – 100% of said weapon’s base damage
  • B equates to 61% – 80% of said weapon’s base damage
  • C equates to 45% – 60% of said weapon’s base damage
  • D equates to 1% – 44% of said weapon’s base damage
  • E equates to 0% – 1% of said weapon’s base damage

The second factor is how many points you have invested in intelligence:

  • 0 – 25 points equate to 50% of your scaling’s bonus
  • 25 – 50 points equate to 85% of your scaling’s bonus (soft cap)
  • 51 – 99 points equate to 100% of your scaling’s bonus (hard cap)

So for instance, if we have a weapon with a base damage of 200 and an S scaling in strength, then you will enjoy around 101 bonus damage right before you hit the soft cap.

Best Intelligence Scaling Weapons In Dark Souls 3

Intelligence Scaling Weapons, as you can tell by now, are weapons that possess excellent scaling in the Intelligence attribute. This is particularly useful for sorcerers as they can make use of their high intelligence not just for enhancing their spell casting, but also for enhancing a suitable melee weapon. Let’s look at some of the best Intelligence Scaling Weapons in Dark Souls 3.

Crescent Moon Sword

The Crescent Moon Sword is a type of shotel imbued with the power of the moon, well known as Ringfinger Leonhard’s weapon of choice. It is one of the best entry level intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3. It is quite small and lightweight, given that its weight of 2.5 units – this makes for an agile weapon that has a quick, less stamina-consuming moveset. Moreover, owing to the fact that it is a shotel, it comes with a neat innate shield pierce capability.

Do keep in mind that although it requires 10 strength and 16 dexterity to wield, it has no actual scaling in strength. Instead, it comes with a C scaling in dexterity and a D scaling in intelligence. Moreover, as far as its upgrade is concerned, this weapon can neither be infused nor buffed. It can only be reinforced with Titanite Scales; upon max reinforcement, you will be sitting at a whopping 142 physical and magic damage. Lastly, what stands out about this weapon is its unique weapon art, Crescent Blade, where your player assumes a broad stance and fires off a long range crescent moon projectile.

Location: Dropped by Ringfinger Leonhard if killed after using the Black Eye Orb in Anor Londo, after defeating Aldrich, going up one of the elevators in the back of the boss arena, then entering the large bedchamber. Does not drop if you kill him without meeting these conditions (for instance, killing him at Firelink Shrine).

Crystal Sage’s Rapier

The Crystal Sage’s Rapier is a thrusting sword with tiny crystals scattered across its blade. It is often found in the hands of Crystal Sage’s Rapier who use it for self-defense. The crystals boost the magic damage inflicted by the sword, and the item discovery of its wielder, fruit of the lifetime of research conducted by the sages. It is one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3 partially due to the fact that it is the longest thrusting weapon in the game.

This weapon requires 13 strength and 18 dexterity to wield properly. Moreover, it comes with an E scaling in strength and dexterity and a C scaling in intelligence. Furthermore, as far as upgradability is concerned, this weapon can only be reinforced with Titanite Scales. Despite being un-infusable, its scaling actually improves with each reinforcement, reaching A-tier in intelligence and D-tier in strength and dexterity at +5.

Location: Acquired by Soul Transposition of the Soul of a Crystal Sage at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating the Crystal Sage boss in the Crucifixion Woods – located to the left of the swamp, accessed by going into a dilapidated building, past a group of enemies and up the stairs.

Moonlight Greatsword

The Moonlight Greatsword is the legendary dragon weapon associated with Seath the Paledrake. It is strongly connected to Oceiros, the Consumed King, who was infatuated with the search for moonlight but never managed to achieve it. It is arguably the best greatsword a sorcerer can rock and ranks as one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3. It is well-known for its fully charged heavy attacks which fire a high-range projectile that stacks with the blade in terms of damage.

The Moonlight Greatsword requires 16 strenght and 11 dexterity to wield. Moreover, it comes with an E scaling in strength and a C scaling in intelligence in its base form. It can not be infused or buffed, and can only be reinforced with Titanite Scales. At +5 reinforcement, however, it attains a B scaling in intelligence, which, coupled with its 126 physical and 238 magic damage make it a literal beast! What’s more is its weapon art, Moonlight Vortex is unique to itself – your player will draw back the greatsword and thrust to unleash a powerful moonlight projectile, perfect for mage builds fan!

Location: Acquired by Soul Transposition of the Soul of Consumed Oceiros at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Oceiros, the Consumed King in the Consumed King’s Garden.

Greatsword of Judgement

The Greatsword of Judgement is a ceremonial sword, representing the judgement of the moon, but with magic far closer to sorcery than any existing lunar power. It is found wielded in Pontiff Sulyvahn’s left hand and its dark blue hues, deeper than the darkest moon, genuinely reflect his true nature. This weapon is amazing if you want to fit it on some kind of physical/intelligence build, thus ranked as one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3.

It requires 17 strength and 15 dexterity to wield properly with one hand. It comes with a D scaling in all of the following: strength, dexterity and faith.  It can only be reinforced with Titanite Scales as far as upgradability is concerned. What particularly stands out about this weapon is it weapon art, Stance of Judgement, where it gets buffed with dark energy – you can use a normal attack for a lunging thrust or a strong attack to emit side-sweeping, long ranged waves.

Location: Acquired by Soul Transposition of the Soul of Pontiff Sulyvahn at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Pontiff Sulyvahn in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Remember that the closest bonfire will be the Church of Yorshka after you unlocks the gate shortcut to the left of the boss room, down a set of stairs.

Darkmoon Longbow

The Darkmoon Longbow is the Longbow of Darkmoon Gwyndolin, who was gradually devoured by Aldrich. This golden bow is imbued with powerful magic and is most impressive with Moonlight Arrows. You’d always want to stick with those arrows as it performs significantly worse with anyother ammunition. With that said, it is one of a kind and easily falls under the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3.

It requires 7 strength, 16 dexterity and 10 intelligence to use, one of the more stat-demanding weapons on this list. It comes with an E scaling in dexterity and a C scaling in intelligence. It cannot be buffed or infused, leaving it only upgradable via Titanite Scale reinforcement. Moreover, its weapon art, Darkmoon Arrow, infuses a readied arrow with Darkmoon essence, granting it magic damage and the ability to pierce shields. This makes it an excellent supplementary weapon to your spells for long range control.

Location: Acquired by Soul Transposition of the Soul of Aldrich at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Aldrich, Devourer of Gods in Anor Londo. Go up the stairs and into the Cathedral where Ornstein and Smough are fought in the first Dark Souls.

Old King’s Great Hammer

The Old King’s Great Hammer is well known as the Great Hammer of the Old Demon King who resides in the Smouldering Lake. It is said that this weapon has survived since old Izalith, and is imbued with remnants of the Chaos Flame, a famous endgame boss from the original Dark Souls. It is the first pyromancer-worthy melee weapon on this list and serves as the best intelligence scaling weapon in Dark Souls 3.

It requires a whopping 30 strength to properly wield along with 10 intelligence and 10 faith. This gives it solid potential to be integrated in some kind intelligence build apart from the obvious pyromancy build (pyromancy potency is affected by both intelligence and faith combined). It can only be reinforced with Titanite Scale, unable to undergo any buffs or infusion. It can reach a frightening AR of 326 at max reinforcement on top of being fairly effective against shields.

Location: Acquired by Soul Transposition of the Soul of the Old Demon King at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Old Demon King in Smouldering Lake, which can be accessed via collapsing the wooden bridge in the Catacombs of Carthus. The boss room is located to the left of the entrance, behind the Carthus Sandworm.

Heysel’s Pick

The Heysel’s Pick is renowned for being the primary weapon choice of Yellowfinger Heysel, a Finger of Rosaria and xanthous scholar. It is quite up there in the list of most viable Dark Souls 3 intelligence scaling weapons due to its immense viability as a melee weapon for a physical sorcerer build. It functions as a weapon and a catalyst for casting sorceries, combo’ing best with Farron Flashsword, Great Farron Dart and Great Soul Arrow. It requires 12 strength, 10 dexterity and 19 intelligence to use. It comes with D scaling in strength, E scaling in Dexterity and a B scaling in intelligence.

As a melee weapon, it deals chip damage (damage through shields), has the flexibility to perform jump attacks and also possesses counter damage capability as it is technically a Thrust-type weapon. While it can not be infused, Heysel Pick, as is the case with most catalysts, has Steady Chant as the weapon art – this increases both the damage of the spells casted by it and the melee damage of the weapon itself. Moreover, it can only be reinforced with Titanite Scales and at +5 reinforcement experiences 162 physical and 122 magic damage!

Location: Drops from Yellowfinger Heysel, an invading dark spirit encountered in the Road of Sacrifices.

Immolation Tinder

The Immolation Tinder signifies the profaned flame wielded by the Fire Witches of Irithyllian descent, frigid spirits roaming the Boreal Valley. This eye-catching torch, both a weapon and a staff, is enshrouded in an everlasting flame – don’t underestimate it! Given that it can be used to cast sorceries as well as inflict physical damage, it deserves a place in my list of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3. Contrary to one may think, it is capable of casting sorceries, not pyromancies, combo’ing pretty well with the likes of Farron Flashsword and Soul Greatsword.

It requires quite a heavy stat investment to weild – 18 strength, 18 dexterity, 12 intelligence and 12 faith! It comes with a D scaling in both strength and dexterity as well a B scaling in intelligence. As far as upgradability is concerned, it can not be buffed or infused, albeit reinforcing it to the maximum with Titanite Scale does significantly boost its scalings, most notably intelligence to A-tier! At this point, it reaches a massive physical damage of 206 and solid fire damage of 132. Moreover, at 60 intelligence, it achieves a spellbuff of 220.

Location: Drops from Fire Witches in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.

If you think this is just an oversized torch, you’re in for a scorching time in PvP 🙂

Lothric Knight Sword

The Lothric Knight Sword is a well-crafted straight sword designed for thrusting attacks, wielded by the venerable Knights of Lothric, who, once crushed anything that threatened their shores with its aid. The Lothric Knight sword is the best straight sword a sorcerer can use for their physical intelligence build and no list of best Dark Souls 3 intelligence scaling weapons is complete without it. It comes with a stat requirement of 11 strength and 18 dexterity, which is quite a steal for what this bad boy is capable of.

It naturally comes with a D scaling in both strength and dexterity. It is also capable of being buffed and infused, on top of being able to undergo regular titanite reinforcement. While it is certainly viable in physical/quality builds, it also works like a charm with intelligence. With both a Crystal infusion (via Crystal Gem) or a Simple Infusion (via Simple Gem), it achieves an S-scaling in intelligence, rarely seen in Dark Souls 3. It sits at 133 physical and magic damage with a Crystal infusion and at 113 physical and magic damage with a Simple infusion. This is without taking the scaling into account.

Location: Dropped by Lothric Knights, which can be easily farmed down the stairs from the Tower on the Wall bonfire. Also sold by Greirat for 4000 souls, after pillaging Irithyll Valley.

Great Corvian Scythe

The Great Corvian Scythe is the scythe of the forlorn souls guided by heretical storytellers. It is said that the Mistress of the Painted World wielded this herself, making them inflict profuse bleeding, such that the blood splattered on the wielder. It is considered to be the best intelligence scaling weapon in Dark Souls 3 for bleed/intelligence builds due to its strong affinity with the attribute and the highest innate bleed in the game.

It requires 16 strength and 18 dexterity to wield with a single hand and comes with a D scaling in strength and C scaling in dexterity. While it comes with no natural scaling in intelligence, what’s insane is that it achieves a S scaling in intelligence upon either a Crystal infusion (via Crystal Gem) or a Simple Infusion (via Simple Gem). While it does lack in speed in comparison to other weapons on this list, it does outdo all other reaper class weapons in terms of range, making it quite viable. Furthermore, its weapon art, Neck Swipe, possesses high hyper armor – this attack aims for the scruff of a foe’s neck, and when successful, functions as a head shot, inflicting heavy damage.

Location: Dropped by Corvians (winged enemies) wielding it in Road of Sacrifices, Untended Graves, and Grand Archives.

Friede’s Great Scythe

The Friede’s Great Scythe is one of the most well-known scythes in Dark Souls 3 lore. It was once wielded by Sister Elfriede, with a curved blade thinly coated by Painted World frost that easily breaks the guard of shields. It is the only dual wielded scythe on this list and, given its origins, is ranked as one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3. It comes with an intensive stat requirement of 12 strength, 16 dexterity, 12 intelligence and 11 faith.

It can only be reinforced with Titanite Scale, devoid of any buff or infusion capability. However, its scaling improves with each reinforcement, making it best fittable on a dexterity/intelligence build. This is because at +5 reinforcement, it achieves a whopping A-tier scaling in both dexterity and intelligence -you simply can’t overlook that. On top of having innate Frostbite, what makes this weapon frightening is its weapon art,  Elfriede’s Stance, where you can either use a normal attack to leap forward and swing twice, or a strong attack to coat the earth with running frost.

Location: Aquired by Soul Transposition of Soul of Sister Friede (Ashes of Ariandel DLC) at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Sister Friede in Painted World of Ariandel. If you own the DLC, this area can be accessed by speaking to the NPC at the altar near the Cleansing Chapel Bonfire in Cathedral of the Deep.

Onyx Blade

Elfriede, the eldest amongst her sisters and leader of the Sable Church, bestowed the Onyx Blade sword to her knight, Sir Vilhelm. Only, the sword was a farewell gift, and acceptance signified the knight’s resignation from Elfriede’s service. If you’re looking for a suitable weapon to fit into your Dark/Intelligence build, then the Onyx Blade is one of the best intelligences scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3 in this case.

It requires 14 strength, 12 dexterity, 15 intelligence and 15 faith to properly wield with one hand. It has limited upgradability as it can only be reinforced with Twinkling Titanite, unable to be infused or buffed (except by its weapon art). It tops the greatsword class in terms of range, and can really deliver a good beatdown with its weapon art, Elfriede’s Blackflame. Your player will buff the Onyx blade with blackflame which grants it an additional flat 145 fire damage – this buff lasts for 45 seconds, keep that in mind!

Location: Dropped by Sir Vilhelm in the Painted World of Ariandel. If you own the Ashes of Ariandel DLC, then this area can be accessed by speaking to the NPC at the altar near the Cleansing Chapel Bonfire in Cathedral of the Deep.

I love this weapon 90& because of its eye-catching design,

Dancer’s Enchanted Swords

Dancer’s Enchanted Swords are a pair of enchanted swords that Pontiff Sulyvahn bestowed upon the Dancer of the Boreal Valley. These blades, symbolic of Dancer’s vows, are enchanted with dark magic in the right hand, and fire in the left, mirroring the Great Pontiff himself. These dual wielding swords are a shredder when it comes to DPS (Damage per second) in both PvP and PvE, arguably serving as one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3.

It requires 12 strength, 20 dexterity, 9 intelligence and 9 faith to properly use. Moreover, it comes with a natural scaling of D in all four attributes. These, unfortunately, can not be improved as the weapon is immune to buffs and  infusions – although it can be reinforced with Titanite Scale. Upon +5 reinforcement, it achieves 144 physical damage and 114 damage in terms of both magic and fire, making it super effective against enemies weak to either or both. Its weapon art is also pretty unique: Dancer’s Grace allows you to unleash the fury of both blades in a dancing spin motion and use a strong attack to continue the combo for as long as your stamina lasts.

Location: Aquired by Soul Transposition of Soul of the Dancer at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Dancer of the Boreal Valley in Cathedral in High Wall of Lothric. The boss fight can be triggered in two ways, either by the player killing three Lords and being teleported there, or killing Emma.

Same geometry but different buffs – truly a force to be reckoned with!

Onikiri And Ubadachi

These dual swords belonged to Kamui, one of the hunters known as the King’s Black Hands. He brought Onikiri with him to the Undead Settlement, where he forged Ubadachi, and was finally prepared to join the ranks of the royal hunters. These bad boys are one of the few weapons in the game that can achieve a good scaling with intelligence, making it one of the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3.

They come with a requirement of 13 strength and 25 dexterity. Moreover, they come with a natural scaling of D in strength and C in dexterity, On the other hand, it can be infused and buffed and, of course, reinforced with regular titanite. It can achieve a S scaling in intelligence with a Crystal infusion (via Crystal Gem) as well as an A scaling in intelligence with a Simple infusion (via Simple Gem), Chaos infusion (via Chaos Gem) and Dark infusion (via Dark gem). Lastly, its weapon art stands out as one of the flashiest weapon arts in the game: Onislayer, where your player leaps forward and slashes mercilessly with both blades.

Location: Dropped by Black Hand Kamui at the top floor of the Grand Archives. Found among the 3 hostile NPCs at top of the Grand Archives, on the staircase that leads to the Twin Princes.

Cleric’s Candlestick

The Cleric’s Candlestick is found in the hands in the Deacons of the Deep who use it as a ritual item. Moreover, the Deacons, under the guidance of Archdeacon McDonnell, became both clergymen and sorcerers, making their candlesticks both a sword and a catalyst. It is one of the better melee-catalyst hybrid weapons that sorcerers should use, deeming it one of the Dark Souls 3 best intelligence scaling weapons. It requires 8 strength, 12 dexterity and 12 faith to wield, a relatively easy requirement to meet.

It comes with a D scaling in both strength and dexterity as well as a C scaling in intelligence. These scalings can be improved with reinforcement; might I add that this is the only boss soul weapon that can be reinforced with titanite. Regardless, at +10 reinforcement, it achieves a whopping A scaling in intelligence as well as 115 physical and 126 magic damage. Do note that this is the most upgrading you can do as the Cleric’s Candlestick can not be infused on buffed. Lastly, its weapon art is of key note – Guiding Light is a weapon art where your player ignites the candlestick, similar to a Torch or Follower’s Torch, providing light.

Location: Acquired by Soul Transposition of Soul of the Deacons of the Deep at Ludleth of Courtland in Firelink Shrine. It is obtained after beating Deacons of the Deep in Cathedral of the Deep. The boss chamber is accessed by going up the stairs in the corner behind one of the giants.

Summary

In conclusion, you should be on the lookout for the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3 if you plan on going for a sorcerer/intelligence build, be it pure or hybrid, in the future. Magic has always been one of the more beginner-friendly and fun aspects of the Dark Souls series and possesses a lot of viability, to the point that they can even one-shot bosses. However, while spells are great and all, sorcerers predominantly suffer in close combat where the viability of their catalysts breaks down and puts them in quite a peril.

Therefore, it is imperative to have a secondary melee weapon, regardless of whether or not it has spell-casting capabilities. They will allow you to hold your ground in close-combat, which is a situation you will eventually have to overcome in both PvP and PvE, be it due to your FP bar finishing or your opponent being extremely agile. I have provided you with a list of the 15 best Dark Souls 3 intelligence scaling weapons, and all of them vary quite a lot in terms of attack speed, range, damage, scalability. Take a good look at these various factors and carefully decide which will complement your playstyle and skill level most. And if all hell breaks loose, you could always opt for the Lothric Knight Sword!

Regardless, some of these weapons include the Cleric’s Candlestick, the Moonlight Greatsword, the Immolation Tinder, Onyx Blade, Crescent Moon Sword, among many others. And if you’re not a fan of such builds, trust me when I say that you don’t have to restrict yourself to a particular playstyle – the real fun in Dark Souls 3 is replayability and the number of different ways you can approach it. So take a leap of faith and try out new things like sorcerer builds with the best intelligence scaling weapons in Dark Souls 3.
