Upgrading Weapons
Most of the Weapons in Alan Wake 2 can be upgraded using Manuscript Fragments, which you can find in Lunchboxes. However, this is only the case for Saga Anderson’s Weapons, as Alan Wake has no direct Weapon Upgrades. Instead, you’ll have to find Words of Power to upgrade Alan Wake’s weapons and abilities.
Pistol

User | Saga Anderson |
Type | Handgun |
Chapter | Return 1 – Invitation |
Location | This weapon is unlocked by default for Saga. |
Upgrade Name | Description | Manuscript Fragments Required |
---|---|---|
Again And Again | Hold the fire button to activate auto-fire mode. This significantly increases the rate of fire. | 18 |
More Bullets | Increases the magazine size by 50%. | 12 |
Another Headshot | Land two headshots quickly to stun an enemy for an extended duration. | 12 |
I’m not a big fan of the Pistol or Handguns in general. Even in games like Resident Evil and Counter-Strike 2, Handguns feel underwhelming. However, if the Handgun is a Desert Eagle or Magnum with high stopping Power and Damage, I become infinitely more likely to use it. Even so, the Pistol has a decent range and rate of fire.
However, the Pistol’s damage and stopping power are mediocre, and it might be worth investing in the “Another Headshot” and “Again And Again” Weapons Upgrade to compensate.
Sawed-Off Shotgun

User | Saga Anderson |
Type | Shotgun |
Chapter | Return 2 – The Heart |
Location | Following the Chapter’s story, you’ll eventually end up at the General Store in Cauldron Lake. Furthermore, here you’ll fight an enemy wearing a Deer’s head. Moreover, after beating him, you can go into the room he broke out of and see the Shotgun hanging in a Cabinet on the wall. Solve the Puzzle to get the Shotgun. |
The Sawed-Off Shotgun was my favorite early-game weapon to use. Unfortunately, it’s not as good as its bigger brother, the Pump-Action Shotgun, but the Sawed-Off Shotgun is available early, convenient, and fun.
Crossbow
User | Saga Anderson |
Type | Bow |
Chapter | Return 3 – Local Girl |
Location | Following the Chapter’s story, you’ll eventually end up near a Hut with a Shooting Range nearby. Furthermore, you’ll find a Cult Stash stowed away at this location. However, this container is locked with a Padlock, so you’ll have to solve the Puzzle to unlock it. Alternatively, if you want to cheat, the padlock code is 527. |
I wouldn’t say I liked the Crossbow all that much. Furthermore, it felt clunky compared to the other options in Alan Wake 2. I feel the Handguns, Rifle, and Shoguns are a better choice unless you have no other option.
Hunting Rifle
User | Saga Anderson |
Type | Rifle |
Chapter | Return 5 – Old Gods |
Location | You can easily skip this gun since it’s not directly in your path, but it’s a great weapon, so you should consider getting it. Furthermore, you can get it from the Wellness Center Security Office in Bright Falls. However, the door will be locked, so you must find the Doorknob to unlock it. |
The Hunting Rifle is a joy to use. However, there is some debate over if the Hunting Rifle is better than the Shotgun. I like the Pump-Action Shotgun more, but your mileage may vary.
Pump-Action Shotgun
User | Saga Anderson |
Type | Shotgun |
Chapter | Return 6 – Scratch |
Location | You can find the Pump-Action Shotgun at Bright Fall’s Sherrif’s Station in Sheriff Tim Breaker’s Office. However, the Sherrif’s Office will be locked, so you must detour and get the key from the Morgue. Moreover, this weapon will be locked away in a Cabinet, and you’ll need to solve the Puzzle. Alternatively, if you want to cheat, the Padlock Code is 723. |
This is a definite upgrade over the Sawed-Off Shotgun, and I’d say it is the Best Weapon you can have when playing as Saga Anderson.
Revolver
User | Alan Wake |
Type | Handgun |
Chapter | Initiation 2 – Casey |
Location | You don’t get this weapon by default when starting as Alan Wake, but you can’t miss it. Furthermore, if you progress the story, eventually, you’ll enter an Alley and start a Cutscence. After the cutscene ends, you’ll get the iconic Revolver and Flashlight from the first Alan Wake. |
The Revolver and Flashlight were iconic in the first Alan Wake game, and it’s a joy to see them return in Alan Wake 2. However, as I’ve already mentioned, I’m not a fan of Handguns, but I can appreciate the sentimentality of this weapon.
Flare Gun
User | Alan Wake |
Type | Handgun |
Chapter | Initiation 4 – We Sing |
Location | This is another weapon that’s hard to skip. Moreover, you can get it near the end of the Chapter. Furthermore, the Flare Gun will be lying on a Wooden Desk covered with some red cloth. |
I think the Flare Gun is an interesting Handgun, if you can even call it that. It’s unlike other Handguns and works more like a Shotgun, being able to take out more than one enemy at once. However, like the Crossbow, I felt it was clunky to use.
Double-Barreled Shotgun
User | Alan Wake |
Type | Shotgun |
Chapter | Initiation 5 – Room 665 |
Location | You can get the Double-Barreled Shotgun quite early in the Chapter. Furthermore, you need to solve the Oceanview Hotel Puzzle, and, eventually, using the Angel Lamp, you can end up at the Bar and see the Double-Barreled Shotgun in the Cabinet hanging on the wall behind the Counter. |
I loved using the Double-Barreled Shotgun. Furthermore, it’s the best weapon you can use when playing as Alan Wake and should be your go-to.
My Thoughts
I’m a big fan of Saga’s Pump-Action Shotgun and Alan’s Double-Barreled Shotgun as they provide the highest close range damage to the enemies and increases my survivability. Moreover, the absolute destruction Shotguns can cause, along with their ease of use due to their widespread area of fire, makes them great for stressful situations with multiple enemies or boss fights.
However, you’ll love all the weapons in Alan Wake 2 when you’re low on ammo and can’t nitpick. Let me know your thoughts down in the comment section. Happy Gaming!
