What Is The Guardian?
Baldur’s Gate 3 has a massive roster of characters, some of which have gone reworks after the game’s early access. The Guardian, also known as the Dreamlover in the Early Access of Baldur’s Gate 3, is an NPC who comes around to help you with specific tasks in some areas of the game. However, this help is limited to suggestions as the Guardian isn’t like your typical companion.
Key Takeaways
- The Guardian is a Non-player character you create right after creating your character at the start of Baldur’s Gate 3.
- The Guardian used to be called the Dreamlover in the Early Access of Baldur’s Gate 3.
- You meet the Guardian in a dream sequence and must use the Parasite’s Illithid power to continue interacting with them.
- The Guardian will offer you opinions and advice on your decisions. However, interacting with the Guardian and heeding their opinions may affect your relationship with your other companions.
- There is no merit to picking a different Guardian race or appearance, as their character creation page is purely cosmetic and does not affect pure gameplay. Hence there is no Best Guardian.

Guardian Location
At the start of Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll also have to create a Guardian after customizing and choosing your character. You can customize the appearance of this Guardian character, among other things. However, you will meet this character a bit later, after the start of the game.
In particular, you will meet them in a Dream sequence if you rest long in the area. Doing so will cause a gate to the Guardian to appear near you, and the Guardian will first interact with you. After this event, you can now interact with the Guardian freely. However, you must use the Parasite’s Illithid power to meet with the Guardian.
Guardian Romance
Interacting with the Guardian will affect your relationships with your other companions. The Guardian offers you advice on what decisions to make, such as not taking out the Mind Flayer’s Parasite completely, which can be quite a daunting thing to accept. However, you can make your own decisions in these matters.
However, if you decide to follow the advice of the Guardian and form a positive relationship with them, I assure you that it would be possible to take them down the romantic path like any other character in Baldur’s Gate 3.
My Thoughts:
In my opinion, The particular Guardian you select will not have any gameplay advantage over any other Guardian you would’ve created. You can’t customize the classes and stats of your Guardian. However, you can customize their appearance through their races, sub-races, and other cosmetic features. Hence, there is no Best Guardian in Baldur’s Gate 3.
That concludes my Baldur’s Gate 3 Guide. The point of The Guardian is to add a little more immersion and a feeling of autonomy and belongingness when experiencing the story. Hence, it’s nice to see you don’t need to worry about the particulars of their stats. Furthermore, if you enjoyed this guide, check out our other Baldur’s Gate 3 Guides.
