The Upcoming Bounty Star’s Soulslike Gameplay And Armored Core Vibes Has Me Hooked

Bounty Star: The Morose Tale of Graveyard Clem has been on my radar ever since it was announced. Even though it was set to be released in 2023, for some reason, it was postponed to this year. Although it isn’t out yet, the already available information from the Summer Game Fest where many lucky ones got to play it and its trailer on YouTube are more than enough to give you an idea about what the game has to offer.

Key Takeaways

  • The upcoming 3D Action game Bounty Star is an amalgam of different genres. A soul-like gameplay with mech-fighting combat is the highlight of this game.
  • There seems to be no proper open world and you must rely on precise strategies to take down your enemies.
  • The storyline takes place in a post-post-apocalyptic world and the protagonist lives in a garage where she customizes her mech and grows food in the nearby area to supplement the upcoming missions.
  • The graphical work is stunning and seems to be inspired by PUBG’s Miramar map. The music is a blend of electronic and haunting beats.

And I kid you not, even though an indie production, Bounty Star seems to be a complete AAA package. For reference, it showcases soul-like gameplay, which is already a fan-favorite genre. But the highlight is the amalgam of mech-fighting nostalgia of games like Armored Core and MechWarrior.

Challenging Missions And The Mech Mayhem

Bounty Star isn’t exactly an open world. Instead, you have to complete specific missions with set goals and enemies. While it might seem to limit the gameplay, it actually means each fight is intense and strategic.

You can’t just blast everything in sight. Also, even if you have a strong mech on your back, you can’t just attack the opponents directly, as you will soon realize that the opponents’ overwhelming manpower is too much to handle for you.

Instead, you need to plan your approach, take out patrolling enemies, and find weaknesses in your targets. The strategic depth is amazing.

As far as the combat is concerned, you can expect a soul-like combat experience. To be more specific, I think the game draws some inspiration from Dark Souls. Although it works interestingly. For example, dodging the sword attacks is a bit difficult here, as you’re in a giant mech.

Similarly, landing a hit with your mech’s default sword is super satisfying. But to make it possible and effective, you will have to plan your attacks wisely; otherwise, you’ll be just swinging your sword in the air.

Storyline And The Available Customizations

The storyline takes place in Red Expanse, a post-post-apocalyptic depiction of the American Southwest. The protagonist, Clem, is a bounty hunter who lives in a garage in a hub. She uses the garage to customize and upgrade her mech suit.

In the area surrounding the garage, you can also grow your own food. Interestingly, this food isn’t for decoration only, you can cook meals that give you special bonuses for your next mission. Similarly, the game’s description on its official Steam page also hints at exciting features that will allow players to build their mechs from scratch or from a somewhat empty base.

Regarding the available customization options, the game offers quite a lot of options! If you aren’t a fan of slow-paced sword attacks requiring precision, you can change to a fast-punching weapon and a grenade launcher. You will love this combination if you are a fan of brutality and health-sucking, fast-paced attacks.

Visually Appealing Graphics And Music

If you have seen the trailer I shared above, you know the game’s graphics are top-notch. To me, the whole setup looks like that of PUBG’s Miramar map. So graphically, I would say it is PUBG but on steroids. And I must say the graphics and the attention to detail have truly brought to life the post-apocalyptic setting.

As for the mechs, I would say they look more like they are out of the Avatar movie, considering the top-notch graphics. This whole amalgam of different genres gives me a nostalgic feeling for more than one game and movie. I think this is also the aim of the developers as they have said in an interview.

The use of lighting and color creates a world that feels both haunting and alive. Additionally, the soundtrack, featuring a blend of electronic beats and haunting melodies, perfectly complements the game’s aesthetic. Director Ben Ruiz was lucky enough to collaborate with now-late musician Brother Dege to create a masterpiece for the upcoming game.

What would we get in the official release? Guess we’ll have to wait a little bit more to know.
