Forever classic platformer Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 returns with a PC localization but with the same action-packed gameplay. Players can once again dive into the classic stages with an HD-designed world with anime cutscenes and sound.

It is a perfect release for the retro fans looking to play on the modern systems. Despite being a simple game, Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 feels fresh while ensuring the factor of nostalgia. For instance, the game features normal scrolling rather than complex key combinations. However, the main aspect that made it shine in the community was the developer’s support of the overall series.

Ever since we heard that Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 is being localized by Ratalaika Games and Shinyuden, we knew we had to sit down with the developers to dive deeper into what makes this entry so special.

Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your work on Cyber Citizen Shockman 3.

Alex: My name is Alex Graciano, and I’ve been working in the game industry for 18 years as a translator, tester, and localization project manager. Last year I joined Shinyuden as a Localization & Production Manager.

My tasks in Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 included testing, creating the store’s text, handling the translation of some materials into Japanese, and helping with the promotion of the game on Shinyuden’s social media channels.

What sets Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 apart from its predecessors in terms of gameplay mechanics and features?

Alex: Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 focuses more on action, making platforming elements more light, and it’s somehow a little bit easier than its predecessors, making it more accessible for inexperienced players.

How did the collaboration between Ratalaika and Shinyuden come about for the localization of Cyber Citizen Shockman 3?

Alex: Ratalaika and Shinyuden’s partnership goes back a few years. After Shinyuden got the rights for several of Masaya’s games, we were looking for a partner that could help us with the porting, and we found the perfect partner in Ratalaika, which is a company specialized in the porting of retro games.

They also helped us with Cyber Citizen Shockman 1 and 2 and are in charge of publishing the Shockman titles and many more outside Japan.

Could you elaborate on the significance of the 2-player co-op mode in Cyber Citizen Shockman 3, especially considering its rarity in the action-platforming genre?

Alex: 2-player co-op mode has always been a distinctive feature of the series. Playing with a friend it’s always fun, it provides a different way to enjoy the game. The way the characters can support each other really makes it feel like a superhero team!

Also, as you said, it’s a rarity in the genre, so it helps to set the game apart from others, as well as make it easier.

Expanding on my previous question, with the addition of features like rewind/forward, save states, and CRT filters, what was the team's approach to preserving the nostalgia of the original while enhancing the gameplay for modern audiences?

Alex: While we always aim to provide the players with the closest version to the original, we also understand that modern players are used to certain functions that make games more comfortable, so we just try to provide as many options as possible for everyone, as long as those options don’t take away the soul of the original.

Could you discuss the challenges faced during the localization process, especially considering the differences between the original Japanese text and the newly translated English text?

Alex: Localization is always a big challenge, and for the Japanese, maybe it’s even more so. On top of a language with completely different rules, you also have a culture with different values in many ways.

In the case of Cyber Citizen Shockman, we wanted to find a style that matched the game’s retro feel and comedic style, kind of the one you can find in the Super Sentai series.

Considering the game's relatively short length, how did the development team prioritize creating a memorable and impactful gameplay experience within those constraints?

Alex: We think that Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 holds up very well for its age, but in the end, it’s a game from “another time.” While this can work against it in some ways, it also helps to give it more personality, that’s why keeping this version as close as possible to the original was our priority, and if the original is somehow “too much” for you in some aspect, you can always use the modern functions to adjust to your taste.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Anything that the community wants to hear the most from Ratalaika Games?

Alex: We are currently working on several other retro classics, so if you are a fan of this kind of game, follow us on our social media channels for the latest info! It’s going to be a year full of retro goodness!

Cyber Citizen Shockman 3 is a platformer fighting game developed by Ratalaika Games. The game was released on May 3, 2024, for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch.
