Gamescom is set to return this summer and is rumored to be a hybrid event. The convention will return to Cologne in Germany. Parts of Gamescom will be a digital event with in-person events taking place at a reduced capacity. Presentations made up of the latest games reveals and trailers will be the focus of the digital events. The Opening Night Live show will make a return and be hosted by Geoff Keighley. Tickets are expected to release in May with prices to be announced later.
The Uncertainty Regarding to Gamescom
Organizers for the event reassured gamers saying that the convention will be safe. They will be following the #B-SAFE4Business guidelines by Koelnmesse, the exhibition center in Cologne. There will be a mandatory mask policy and more space to avoid crowded settings. There is uncertainty whether the German government will allow large events to take place in the summer. Recently German officials said that the UK variant makes up for most new infections. The new variant is responsible for 40% of new cases compared to 6% a month ago. Countries around the world are rushing to get as many people vaccinated before the Covid-19 variant spreads. Germany has recorded over 74,000 deaths and over 2,600,000 million total cases
It is unlikely that German government would allow a high showcase to take place when they are struggling to contain a new covid strain. Vaccination programs were briefly halted, after the Oxford vaccine was temporarily suspended. A lot can happen before summer but it is unclear if publishers would attend the event. E3 2021 will be a digital event for example. If Covid-19 is not held in check, then Gamescom will most likely have to be a digital event.
