God of War Ragnarok is the much-awaited sequel to the famous God of War Franchise. Since the game’s release, it has surpassed expectations and has created a strong fanbase. The game offers players multiple avenues to dive into, such as exploration, combat, and an enriching storyline. You have to face off against numerous mob bosses that aren’t always easy to beat. Hence you need to build up your kit. Therefore, we provide you with this God of War Ragnarok Nornir Chests guide so you can move one step further.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Nornir Chests are treasured and rewarding chests in the game.
  • They give you permanent stats that help you in winning multiple battles.
  • There are 35 Nornir Chests in total, though you only need to find 30 to upgrade fully.

What are Nornir Chests?

Nornir Chests, also known as rune chests, are precious and permanently raise your character’s level. They provide you with two rewards. One is the Idunn Apple which increases Kratos’s Health bar, while the other reward is Horns of Blood Mead which increases Kratos’s rage meter. Both upgrades are crucial if you wish to face off against the stronger monsters that will gnaw at you during the end game.  The rewards keep alternating, so if you got an Idunn Apple on your first chest, you would get the Horns of Blood Mead on the next.

Moreover, not all chests are accessible at every point in the game. Some require specialized equipment only available to you after you finish certain parts of the story. For those, you will have to grind so that you can get your hands on as many as possible. Nonetheless, check out all the locations below to be as prepared as possible.

Svartalfheim

Starting off, we will list all the Nornir chests you can find in Svartalfheim. The maximum number of chests you can find in this Realm is ten, all scattered throughout. So without further ado, let’s dive right in.

Aurvangar Wetlands

1st Chest

The Aurvangar Wetlands is home to two Nornir Chests. They are easy to obtain if you follow the guidelines below.

The first chest you can find is near the geysers, as you can see below. Here, you will have to find a way to freeze the geysers so you can make your way across. One way is using your Leviathan axe and frost ability to freeze the geysers and provide yourself ample time to make it across.

Once across, look towards your right, and you should be able to spot the Nornir Chest. To access the chest contents, you will have to destroy the three runes. There are easy to spot. One can be spotted directly right of the chChestThe second rune is on the island left of the chChestYou can walk there, so you will have to throw your axe to break it.

Lastly, make your way down from the chest to the third rune by freezing the geyser underneath. Here, you will be able to see a glowing rune under a tree. Destroy it and head back top to claim your reward.

2nd Chest

The second chest of Aurvangar Wetlands is accessible once you make your way under the small wooden bridge. It’s relatively easy to spot, but it’s around the legendary chest area if you are still struggling. Once you cross it, dock your boat and head right, and you will find the chest. To unlock this chChestyou will have to hit the golden spinners to make sure they showcase the correct rune. For example, the first spinner is located to the right of the chest. You will have to ensure it matches the first rune on the chest, the “P” rune. Make sure you freeze the geyser to ensure that the correct rune is displayed.  You can find the second rune by going around the first spinner. Repeat the process, and there will only be one left. The third rune is located near the legendary chest. If you have already collected the chest, it should be easier to find, but it’s towards the top left corner for those who haven’t. Hit it till it displays the “N” rune, and you will be set to go.

Dragon Beach

Moving on, we have the Dragon Beach. You can only find one Nornir Chest here, so there is no need to spend too much time here. The chest here is relatively easy to spot as it is around the back of the area near the geyser. Once you get close to it, you can see it sitting under the geyser.

As for the runes, you can find the first one behind the chest. You

will have to freeze the geyser first and aim correctly at the rune to destroy it. For the second rune, you can see around the crate. It will be behind a gate that you can damage with sonic arrows. If you can’t do that, you will have to go

around the rocks and destroy them from behind. Lastly, look for another geyser near the other crane for the third rune. The rune will be hiding behind the water from the geyser. Freeze the geyser to pinpoint the rune and then destroy it to get your reward.

Radsvinn’s Rig

Another location that is home to Nornir Chests is the Radsvinn’s Rig. There is only one chest that you can find here. It will be located near the top of the actual rig,  beside the forge. Once you get to the chChestyou will have to find and light three torches with your Blades of Chaos.

The first rune is to the left of the chest, and you cannot miss it. The second torch is near the metal fence that you can spot just to the right of the furnace. Once through there, you can hit the torch with your Blades. Lastly, the third torch is found near the backside of the furnace. Here, you might see some barrels blocking your path so ask Atreus to break them with his arrows and continue forward. When close to the torch, throw your chains to light.

Alberich Island

Alberich Island has the most straightforward chChesto find and complete. You will notice it as soon as you dock onto the island, as it is

right there. However, as easy as it is to find, the harder it is to unlock it. To open this chest, you will need to be rapid and accurate, for you will have to hit three bells quickly. You can spot the first bell near the left side of the chest, hidden behind a gate. You can find the second bell just opposite the chest. However, it won’t be accessible to hit. For that, you will have to ask Atreus to shoot the barrels to lower the bell. Lastly, you can spot the last bell above the chest. Hit them in this specific order and in succession, and you will be rewarded.

Myrkr Tunnels

This chest is only available to you when you are returning to Svartalfheim through the special passage made by Brok. To unlock this chest, you will have to light three different torches.

The first torch is right across the chChestYou can ignite it with your Blades of Chaos. For the second torch, you can spot it to the left of the chest. However, you can’t ignite it as quickly as the last one. This torch is quite far from you. Hence you will have to use Sigil Arrows and make a pathway to it. Then light the bubbles with your blades, and you will eventually light it.

Lastly, you can light the third torch, hidden behind some barrels across the corridor of the chest. Just make your way to the torch and light it.

The Forge

The Forge contains one of the God of War Ragnarok Nornir Chests. It is only available to you by following through with the storyline. Through one mission, you will be led back to Svartalfheim to collect a spear. Just enter through the Myrkr Tunnels and head inside the opening that pops up to get to it.

The Spear is crucial in unlocking this chChestYou will have to impale three runes and then detonate your spear simultaneously. You can spot the first rune on the cliff beside the chest to your left. The second rune is across the chest, hidden inside a small hole. As for the last rune, you can spot it on your way to the mining carts. It will be between two rocks on the cliff.

The Applecore

The Applecore in Svartalfheim has two precious Nornir Chests. Both will be integral if you wish to get more than 30 Nornir Chests. So let’s talk about them individually.

1st Chest

You can find the first chChestight at the start by going down the zipline. Use your spear near the end of the zipline to jump up and make your way to the chest. To unlock this chest, hit all three runes with your spear and then detonate simultaneously.

You can find the first rune on a raised platform right across from the chest in the hollow area. Impale it with a spear and look up, and you can spot another rune as well. For the last rune, you will have to go to the top of the rocks and see the third rune there.

2nd Chest

The second chChestan be found in the room with the Water Puzzle. Search for a crawlspace in that room and make your way through. Here, you will see a wind spot you can detonate with your spear. Doing that will reveal a new mystic gateway and a Nornir Chest.

Unlocking this chest is the same as the last one, as you must destroy all three runes simultaneously. You can find the first rune across the newly revealed mystic gateway. The second rune is hidden behind some rocks near the Yggdrasil tear. Break past those rocks and impale the second rune.

Lastly, we have the troublesome third rune. It is pretty hard to find due to its positioning, which makes it invisible to your eyes. So follow these instructions carefully, or you might be lost. From the Yggdrasil tear, make your way in the opposite direction to the end of the platform. Once there, hover your crosshair around the right side of the stationary cog. You will notice that your crosshair will change, revealing the location of the third rune. Fire here and detonate all three runes.

Jarnsmida Pitmines

Using the gate beside your newly found Mystic gateway in Applecore, head to Jarnsmida Pitmines. And make your way to the location below.

To unlock this chest, you need to light up three braziers. However, this isn’t doable with just your Blades of Chaos; you will need Sigil Arrows as well. You have probably figured out the first rune, which is to the left of the chChestThis one can be easily lit with your Blades of Chaos.

The second rune is located down from the platform opposite the chest. Keep looking around, and you should be able to spot a torch on the left side. To light this torch, fire a line of sigil arrows from Kratos to the chest and then hit them with your Blades of Chaos. If the bubbles aren’t big enough, hit another sigil arrow in the middle of it.

Finally, the last rune is located to the left of the chest near the water wheel. Stop the water wheel with your axe and then light the torch with your blades to unlock the chest,

Midgard

Next up in our God of War Ragnarok Nornir Chests guide, we have Midgard. Midgard is another small Realm in God of War Ragnarok that holds 4 Nornir Chests. They aren’t that difficult to unlock, so if you are looking for some easy rewards, you know where to go.

Raider Hideout

The Raider Hideout has one Nornir Chest for you to unlock. It is located under the pathway leading to the Mystic Gateway. Inside the house, you will face off against multiple raiders that you must defeat. If you struggle to beat them, check out our God of War Ragnarok Tips and Tricks guide.

Afterward, pick up a firebomb from the group and throw it at the rocks blocking the opening around the Tapestry. This will light the first torch. Look left of the opening and at the corner for the second torch. Use your blade to eliminate the red bramble, and then use the Sigil Arrows to light up the second torch. Lastly, you can find the third torch around the entrance. Use sigil arrows here as well to light it up.

The Oarsmen

You can find the Oarsmen’s chest near the Statue. The Statue is located right beside the Mystic Gateway, so you will be able to spot it with ease. To unlock the chest though, you will have to ring three bells in rapid succession. However, to find all three bells, you will first have to unlock an area.

From the locked gate, there is a wall beside it that you can climb. Climb that wall until you are interrupted by a cutscene. This will trigger a sub-boss fight with The Huntress. She isn’t hard to defeat if you keep aiming for her horns. Afterward, climb on top of the golden chain and use the silver chain. This will bring a back door into the picture that you can use to get inside.

This will lead you to the room with the Nornir Chest. You can see the first bell in the crack in the wall, hit it, and run forward. Then make your way to the door you opened to hit the second bell. For the last bell, turn around and hit the bell opposite the cavern.

Well of Urd

This chest t kes you all the way to the northern side of Midgard. Make your way to the end of the path that leads from the shop until you come across a cliff. Once there, look around, and you will be able to spot a chest.

To unlock this chChestyou have to lig t up three torches with your Blades or Sigil Arrows. For the first torch, head opposite of the chest towards the climbing spot. Look towards the left of it, and you can spot it. You can light it up with your Blades.

For the second torch, move up the mountain using the climbing spot. On your way, you will be able to see it; however, you must keep going until you cannot climb anymore. When you look down now, it will appear on your left. You can light it up with your Blades of Chaos by jumping down on it, or you can use sigil arrows.

The sigil arrows will save you from the hassle of climbing up again, as the third torch is at the top. Once you reach the top, turn right, and you’ll see the last torch.
