Learn how to unlock and cast the Crucio Curse by making the correct Crucio Choice in Hogwarts Legacy and start tortuing your enemies.
Here is a detailed guide to help players learn the Crucio Spell.
Choosing Sebastian Sallow’s quest line introduces ‘In the Shadow of the Study,’ providing an opportunity to learn the Unforgivable Curse, Crucio. Discover the Crucio choice that unlocks this spell and its benefits within the Hogwarts Legacy.
One of the three unforgivable curses, the Cruciatus Curse (Crucio), can be learned and cast on enemies in Hogwarts Legacy without major consequences. The other two curses, Imperio and Avada Kedavra, are also available to learn later in the game.
The first unforgivable curse you encounter is the Cruciatus Curse during Sebastian Sallow’s quest “In the Shadow of the Study.” Here, the players are given a choice to learn the Cruciatus Curse while performing the quest. If they make the correct choice, players learn the Torture spell of Crucio.
After performing the first three quests in Sebastian Sallow’s quest line, you unlock the “In the Shadow of the Study” quest. Make sure you are on Level 16, as it comes as a requirement for this quest.
To start the quest and unlock the Crucio curse, follow the mentioned steps:
Speak to Sebastian outside the Slytherin Common room as instructed.
Follow him to talk to another quest’s companion, Ominis Gaunt.
Once you have talked to Ominis, open the Slytherin’s door by firing up the three braziers through the Confringo spell. These Braziers are in the two hallways where the Slytherin’s door is.
Walk through the door once it opens up, and clear the path to the next door by casting the Reparo spell.
Speak with Ominis to open the next door.
In the next area, match two symbols on the gate to the Slytherin lock’s dial to open the gate.
Go through the gate and find another gate with two symbols. Match those symbols in the dial on the Slytherin lock nearby.
After going through another gate, find the next gate and a Slytherin lock, match the symbols, and pass through the next gate.
Find a way by talking to both characters. During this time, players can learn the Cruciatus curse (Crucio) and unlock the spell.
Learning the Cruciatus curse (Crucio) during “In the Shadow of the Study” is the main reward of the quest, along with up to +180 XP.
After you have started the “In the Shadow of the Study” quest, you may run into trouble opening a door. The only way to open it is by performing a Cruciatus curse on someone.
Now is when you talk to Sebastian and earn three options:
Very well, I don’t want to learn the Cruciatus Curse.
I want to learn the Cruciatus Curse, but you must cast it on me.
Teach me the Cruciatus Curse, and I’ll cast it on you.
Selecting “I don’t want to learn the Cruciatus Curse” means you won’t learn or cast it. You can later meet Sebastian in Undercroft to learn any missed Unforgivable curse.
Regarding the Crucio Choice, both options, casting a spell on Sebastian or yourself, don’t affect your friendship or character’s life. However, the curse causes significant damage over time, reducing health. Avoid casting it on yourself without a means to heal, and opt for Sebastian Sallow.
Why Should You Learn Crucio
I recommend learning Crucio at least once in a playthrough, even though it is a forbidden dark spell.
The Cruciatus Curse, a potent and illegal spell in the Wizarding World, can be freely cast after choosing Crucio in Hogwarts Legacy. This damaging spell breaks enemies’ shields and is crucial for future combat. Learning Crucio during “In the Shadow of the Study” is vital as it might be missable.
Choosing not to learn the Cruciatus Curse might lock you out, although some players mention an alternative. Visiting Sebastian in Undercroft might offer a chance to learn it if missed during the quest.
