Resident Evil had turned from a third-person survival horror into a shoot-em-up with the release of Resident Evil 6. The series was losing fans which made it harder to make sales.
But Resident Evil 7, the next big main title of the series, proved to be the redemption of the series and delivered fans with what they wanted with a Resident Evil game. What made this game so likable? Let’s explore and find out.
The Baker Family
Even if you don’t play the game and watch some clips or videos, you’ll find the Baker Family to be a compelling set of characters. Except for one member, the Baker family serves as the game’s antagonists. Each family member has a dedicated chapter, bringing unique-level designs and puzzles to solve.

Jack, the man of the house, is reminiscent of MR. X and Nemesis from previous games. His presence is unsettling, making you feel nervous as you navigate their home. Jack is a powerhouse impervious to bullets, relentlessly pursuing and “disciplining” you.
Though not as iconic as Jack, Marguerite introduces players to a horrifying world filled with insects and grotesque creatures. She is an overly protective and strict motherly figure. Players must rely on their wits to quickly solve puzzles and avoid her wrath.
Lucas, the son of Jack and Marguerite, embodies pure insanity. He delights in torturing others and setting up sadistic traps and puzzles reminiscent of the movie “SAW.” His sections are filled with tension as you navigate his cruel games.
Zoe, the least seen member of the family, aids you in escaping the house and pursuing the main objective of finding the missing person you were originally searching for.
Each family member’s distinct personality and approach to tormenting the player add significant variety to the gameplay, keeping it fresh with unique level designs.
As the story progresses, you uncover the true nature of the Bakers and learn how different they were before the game’s events, ultimately revealing the true villain. To this day, I still love the Baker family characters, as they were the main reason the game was so captivating and enjoyable.
Horror FPS Perfection
Resident Evil: Biohazard was the first game in the series to adopt a first-person survival horror format. This change was new and unique for the franchise. During the game’s marketing and announcements, fans were worried that the series would become even worse, fearing it had abandoned traditional themes. However, they were wrong.
The shift to first-person proved to be a great decision. Resident Evil returned to its roots as a horror game. Combining this with a first-person perspective resulted in not just one of the best Resident Evil games but also one of the best survival horror games.

The horror elements of the game were enhanced due to the first-person camera. This perspective shift also improved character interactions, making them more engaging and immersive, putting the player in the shoes of someone surviving a crazy family.
The Revival
With the success of Resident Evil: Biohazard, the series was revitalized, giving fans hope for its future. Players were optimistic that maintaining this formula in future games would continue to be enjoyable. The game’s success also attracted new players to the series, generating excitement for remakes of previous titles.
Resident Evil regained the trust of its fans and attracted new players who hadn’t been interested in earlier games. Many players have stated that RE: Biohazard might be the best game in the series. With the series back on track, the remakes have sold and performed well in the market, thanks to the successful first-person twist to the Resident Evil formula.

Setting A Standard
Resident Evil: Biohazard has set a standard for survival horror games that very few games have been able to replicate. Players wanted more of this style of game design which the Capcom developers listened to and made the next game, Resident Evil: Village play the same.
The first-person Resident Evil games are a great way to get into the series or if you are looking for a new or refreshing experience that no other game can provide. I hope Capcom keeps releasing Resident Evil games with similar designs because I can’t get enough of them.
Good job! Please give your positive feedback 😏
