Killzone Official Website Has Been Permanently Shut Down

Many of us gamers that were around for the early days of the last few PlayStation generations will have fond memories of the Killzone series. The debut title was released back in 2004 for the PlayStation 2. But the series really picked up steam as a launch title for the PS3, with Killzone 2 releasing in 2009.

Launch titles serve a unique purpose in the gaming industry. Parts of these types of games often feel like a tech demo. After all, the developers want to show off what the console can do. I will never forget playing through the very first mission of the campaign and having to use the gyro-tilt of my Dualshock 3 controller to open doors. It felt like a revolutionary advancement at the time.

This series went on to produce two more major titles in Killzone 3 (2011) and Killzone Shadow Fall (2013). While the sales of the latter entries were not as explosive on their respective consoles, the games still garnered solid reviews.

Unforunately, the official website has been taken offline. Any visitor to the site now gets redirected to the PlayStation website instead. Devs at Guerrilla explain that players should still be able to enjoy the online components of the game (mostly):

While this change doesn’t affect the online multiplayer modes, player statistics or ranking data for KILLZONE MERCENARY and KILLZONE SHADOW FALL, it is now no longer possible to create or manage clans in KILLZONE SHADOW FALL. We apologize for this inconvenience.

The Future of the Killzone Series

This leaves the future of the series in a cloud of uncertainty. Will another sequel ever release? It is unknown at this time.

Despite this development, Guerrilla Games are certainly doing well for themselves. They produced a historic PlayStation exclusive in Horizon Zero Dawn, with the game racking up over 10 million in sales over its life span. A sequel for this smash hit, titled Horizon Forbidden West, is slated to release sometime in 2021. This game will bring a strong addition to the already impressive line-up of PS5 exclusives.

Perhaps one day Killzone will make a return to the PS5 generation. It would surely look amazing on the incredibly powerful hardware. Get the original Killzone Trilogy on PS3 here, for the latest deals on Killzone Shadow Fall check here.
