Yes, Shang Tsung does shout “FINISH THEM,” and no, unfortunately nobody shouts “MORTAL KOMBAT” at the appropriate time in the theme. I think this one transgression can be forgiven, though, because the trailer for the Mortal Kombat film looks… really cool! Check out the red band trailer here.
It looks like the story here is going to be standard Mortal Kombat fare. Our intrepid group of heroes is gearing up for the Mortal Kombat tournament. We can only assume that the fate of Earthrealm hangs in the balance, because those are usually the stakes. I just hope they don’t throw time travel or parallel universe hopping into the narrative this time.
The trailer opens with Sub-Zero freezing and tearing off Jax’s arms. This is already a departure from the games, since in Mortal Kombat 9, it’s Ermac who relieves him of his limbs. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since it means the movie isn’t just a copy/paste of a previous Mortal Kombat story.
We find out about the Mortal Kombat tournament because Earthrealm characters are effectively branded with the logo of the tournament. Their dragon “birthmarks” are what earn them an invitation to participate in Mortal Kombat.
This is the fun part. Who do we see in the trailer? Of course, there’s Sub-Zero like I mentioned before. There’s a part in the trailer where everyone feels the need to introduce themselves, so we’ll go in order off of that! We’ve got: Sonya Blade, Kano (feat. eye laser), Liu Kang, Jax (with shiny new arms), Kung Lao, and Raiden. Scorpion also makes a prominent appearance, but needs no introduction.
We get little tidbits of other characters as well. Mileena gets a second of screen time, licking her sai clean. A statue of Shao Kahn can be seen right after that. Of course, Shang Tsung is there to oversee the tournament. We also get what could be Smoke, or maybe it’s hard to tell the difference between our pallet swapped ninjas. Goro gets a moment of glory, leaping in the air, all four fists poised to strike. Finally, Reptile gets a few tidbits, but it kind of looks like he’s just getting his guts ripped out.
Sub-Zero and Scorpion, of course, do some of their signature moves. Our cold Lin Kuei slashes with an icy weapon of his, freezes his opponents blood into a blade to draw more. He even does the grab from Mortal Kombat 11 where he throws them through the ice wall. Scorpion hooks with his kunai, and implores Sub-Zero to “GET OVER HERE.”
Overall, the movie looks like it’s going to be faithful to the games in that the characters have the personalities they’ve built up already. It does look like we’ll be getting a unique take on the Mortal Kombat tournament, and an R-rating, so the traditional blood and gore too. I, for one, am pumped for some MORTAL KOMBAT.
