Finnish developer Housemarque made this announcement a few hours ago:
FYI – ‘Going Gold’ in the video game industry means the game is good enough for the company to start manufacturing and shipping copies. This is surely welcome news for PlayStation 5 owners, who have been left chomping at the bit, due to the lack of exclusives the system has. It means there should be no issues with the game launch meeting its release date.
What Is Returnal?
Returnal is an upcoming single-player, third-person shooter, psychological horror video game, featuring roguelike elements. The focus of the story is on space pilot Selene, who is stranded on the alien planet Atropos. Thankfully she is protected with a high tech suit, armed with deadly weapons.
The quirk here is she is stuck in a time loop. Every time Selene dies, she comes back to life. This gives her the opportunity to explore the different hazardous environments of the planet, while also fighting off the dangerous lifeforms that inhabit it.
This game looks like an interesting blend between the space exploration series Metroid, starring the female Bounty Hunter Samus Aran; as well as the film Groundhog Day – a comedy about a cynical and self-centred Weatherman who is stuck in a time loop.
Returnal runs on the Tempest Engine, which supports advanced haptic feedback and 3D spatial audio. It will also take advantage of the PS5’s SSD and DualSense controller.
Returnal arrives on 30th April as a Playstation 5 exclusive. So far there is no plans for it to release on any other system.
