Are you a PC gamer? Or maybe consoles are more your speed. Either way, if you are like most people who grew up in the early 2000s, you have an appreciation and deep nostalgia for Pokemon. The entire experience defined some people’s childhood.
At least it did so for us. Sadly, growing up helped us realize some things. The world is cruel and heartless if you don’t own certain things; this was the same with Nintendo Consoles.
Our love for Pokemon was stifled by our inability to spend copious amounts of money on every console that caught our eye, and it was sectioned off forever. That was until we discovered Temtem.
An attempt to reimagine the concept of pocket monsters with unique designs and, most impressive, a fully online multiplayer world with functionality that even Pokemon is yet to incorporate into its recent titles.
The game itself allows for exploration of the highs and lows of this beautiful pastel world that has a cartoonish edge to it, resembling elements from Digimon from back in the day. And like any good pocket monster game, it has starters. So join us as we explain the Temtem Best Starter for your journey in this guide.
Starter 1: Smazee
First up, we have Smazee. A scruffy little orange monkey with a blazing passion for all things fun. To draw parallels to Pokemon, it would be best to describe this little guy as a Chimchar type of Pokemon who is purely combative through melee attacks, hence the Melee typing.
Now Smazee is the first in a three-part evolutionary tree. We will discuss its evolution shortly to determine whether it qualifies for the title of Temtem Best Starter since, near the end, you will be fighting with his final evolution by your side, most likely.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
1 | Kick | Neutral | Physical | 32 | High |
4 | Martial Strike | Melee | Special | 50 | Normal |
8 | Tail Strike | Neutral | Physical | 50 | Normal |
10 | Sand Splatter | Earth | Physical | 35 | Normal |
12 | Show Off | Melee | Status | – | Normal |
16 | Uppercut | Melee | Physical | 80 | Normal |
19 | Intimidation | Mental | Status | – | Normal |
26 | Perfect Jab | Melee | Physical | 30 | Normal |
There are other moves you can teach your Smazee, but they are through a Technique Course or achieved through breeding, which is a very complex process in itself, so it’s best left for some other day.
Another thing we can talk about is the type of match-ups that favor Smazee. For instance, Smazee takes half-reduced damage from other Melee temtems but twice the amount of damage from Mental and Digital moves. Huh… apparently brain does beat brawn, at least according to Temtems.
So is Smazee the Temtem Best Starter? Well, not so fast. First, we have to glance at its other two forms before deciding on such a monumental task.
Second Form
The second form of Smazee is achieved after 29 levels are put into them. It is still a Melee-type Temtem but is now referred to as Baboong. It now resembles a baboon more so than a monkey and is bigger.
If we discuss move sets, then Baboong has the same move set as its previous evolution but with some that only it has access to until the final evolution.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
30 | Heat Up | Fire | Status | – | Normal |
40 | Inner Spirit | Melee | Special | 170 | Normal |
48 | Footwork | Melee | Status | – | High |
The type of match-ups remains the same, but the perks do change alongside the stats.
Final Form
Now, this is the final form of your monkey starter, which has turned into a pure, through, and through gorilla. Its physical appearance stays relatively the same while increasing in size and having an added beard held together Viking style. Twenty-three levels after reaching Baboong, you get access to Seismunch.
This is when you really unlock the full potential of Seismunch. It is now not only a Melee type, but it has an additional Earth typing which opens up the range of the character into muti-typed attack bonuses and new resistances. But first, let’s look at the latest moves it will learn before hitting level 100.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
58 | Seismunch’s Wreck | Earth + Melee | Physical | 105 | Normal |
73 | Helicopter Kick | Melee | Physical | 63 | Normal |
89 | Wrenching Massage | Melee + Electric | Physical | 89 | Low |
With the new Earth typing come resistances and weaknesses to other types. When we talk about Resistances, half the damage is taken from Fire, Electric, Crystal, and Toxic types of Temtems. But talking about Weaknesses, there is double damage taken from Water, Nature, Mental, and Digital types of Temtems.
So can we call the Smazee evolution tree the Temtem Best Starter? Well, not right now, as we still have to discuss the other two, and they might bring something to the table that Smazee and its evolutions simply can not. But still, a very strong character to have on your Best TemTem team, regardless.
Starter 2: Crystle
The next starter on the block is Crystle, which is unsurprisingly a Crystal-type Temtem known for its defensive capabilities. This little guy resembles a cute green turtle with a hard shell exterior and four legs. Although their kind resembles fauna, they are more like living minerals than actual living beings.
Now Crystle is part of a three-stage evolutionary tree, just like all starters. It provides the user with tank ability and is the one you want to send out to gauge your opponent’s strength. Can Crystle beat Smazee for the Temtem Best Starter position? Let’s find out.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
1 | Glass Blade | Crystal | Physical | 32 | Normal |
3 | Mirror Shell | Crystal | Status | – | Low |
5 | Nibble | Neutral | Physical | 37 | Normal |
9 | Crystal Dust | Crystal + Wind | Special | 60 | High |
14 | Head Ram | Neutral | Physical | 100 | Low |
17 | Crystallize | Crystal | Status | – | Normal |
27 | Crystal Spikes | Crystal | Special | 100 | High |
There are other moves you can teach you Crystl, but they are through a Technique Course, or they are achieved through breeding which is a very complex process in itself, so it’s best left for some other day.
Another thing we can talk about is the type of match-ups that favor Crystl. For instance, Crystl takes reduced damage from Electric, Mental, and Toxic types but double the damage from Earth, Fire, and Melee types.
So is Crystl the Temtem Best Starter? Well, not so fast. First, we must glance at its other two forms before making such a complex judgment.
Second Form
The second form of Crystl is achieved after 30 levels are put into it. It’s still a Crystal type Temtem but now referred to as Sherald. It now resembles an enormous turtle that closely parallels Grotle, the second form of Turtwig from the Pokemon series.
If we discuss move sets, then Sherald has the same move set as its previous evolution but with access to only two new moves until its final evolution.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
35 | Rampage | Neutral + Melee | Physical | 65 | Low |
45 | Diamond Fort | Crystal | Status | – | Low |
The type of match-ups remains the same, but the perks change alongside the stats. Now, onto the final evolution of Crystl.
Final Form
Your cute little turtle is now a hulking goliath and a walking attack fortress with an entire ecosystem at its back. They are employed by miners mainly as companions in their mining operations. You can evolve your Sherald into Tortenite after gaining 21 levels as Sherald.
This is when you unlock the full potential of Crystl. It is now not only a Crystal type, but it has an additional Toxic typing which opens up the range of the character into muti-typed attack bonuses and new resistances. But first, let’s look at the new moves it will learn before hitting level 100.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
58 | Tortenite’s Garden | Toxic + Crystal | Status | – | Low |
66 | Toxic Gas | Toxic | Special | 65 | Normal |
80 | Crystal Deluge | Crystal + Mental | Special | 100 | High |
With this new Toxic typing come resistances and weaknesses to other types. When we talk about Resistances, there is half damage taken from Water, Nature, Electric, and Mental types of Temtems.
However, with this unique typing comes a four times resistance to Toxic type. But if we were to switch the conversation to Weaknesses, then double damage is taken from Wind, Earth, Fire, and Melee types of Temtems.
So can we call the Crystl evolution tree the Temtem Best Starter? Well, it is an excellent defensive type tank with great stalling capabilities and a surprising amount of damage if played strategically.
Starter 3: Houchin
The final starter is Houchin, a Mental type Temtem known for its high speed and exceptional attack capabilities. This little guy resembles a small humanoid with purple limbs. Once again, drawing a comparison to Pokemon, it appears this one takes inspiration from Meditite, the small floating psychic type.
Like all the other starters, Houchin is part of a three-stage evolutionary tree. Houchin provides the user with great team sweeping potential and is the one you want to send out to finish off your opponent’s most formidable tanks. Can Houchin beat Smazee and Crystl for the Best Temtem Starter position? You might be surprised by the results.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
1 | Psy Wave | Mental | Special | 65 | Normal |
3 | Hypnosis | Mental | Status | – | Normal |
4 | Kick | Neutral | Physical | 32 | High |
8 | Tenderness | Neutral | Status | – | Normal |
11 | Energy Manipulation | Mental + Nature | Special | 45 | High |
16 | Telekinetic Shrapnel | Mental | Physical | 80 | Normal |
20 | Beta Burst | Mental | Special | 100 | Normal |
28 | Psy Surge | Mental | Special | 100 | Low |
There are other moves you can teach you Houchin, but they are through a Technique Course, or they are achieved through breeding which is a very complex process in itself, so it’s best left for some other day.
Another thing we can talk about is the type of match-ups that favor Houchin. For instance, Houchin takes half reduced damage from Neutral, and Melee types but takes double the amount of damage from Electric, Crystal, and Digital types.
So is Houchin the Best Temtem Starter? Well, not so fast. First, we must glance at its other two forms before making such a complex judgment.
Second Form
The second form of Houchin is achieved after 29 levels are put into it. It’s still a Mental type of Temtem but is now referred to as Tental. It has the same body shape but is slightly longer than before.
If we discuss move sets, Sherald has the same move set as its previous evolution but with access to four new moves until its final evolution.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
34 | Humiliating Slap | Neutral | Physical | 90 | Normal |
41 | High-Pressure Water | Water + Fire | Special | 60 | Normal |
42 | Lullaby | Mental | Status | – | Low |
46 | Ninja Jutsu | Neutral | Physical | 130 | Very High |
The type of match-ups remains the same, but the perks change alongside the stats. Now onto the final evolution of Houchin
Final Form
OK, so… it is not what you would expect, but it’s the most potent version of Houchin you currently have. After grinding 24 more levels from Tental you achieve the coveted final evolution, and what do you see? A tall dude who likes lean.
This is when you unlock the full potential of Houchin. It is now not only a Mental type, but it has an additional Water typing which opens up the range of the character into muti-typed attack bonuses and new resistances. But first, let’s look at the latest moves it will learn before hitting level 100.
Level | Name | Type | Class | Damage | Priority |
58 | Nagaise’s Fury | Water + Mental | Special | 105 | Normal |
84 | Blackhole | Mental + Earth | Physical | 100 | Low |
With this new Water typing come resistances and weaknesses to other types. When we talk about Resistances, there is half damage taken from Neutral, Earth, Water, Fire, and Melee types of Temtems. However, with this unique typing comes a four times weakness of the Electric type.
But if we were to switch the conversation to Weaknesses, there is double damage taken from Nature, Digital, Crystal, and Toxic types of Temtems.
So can we call the Houchin evolution tree the top Temtem Starter? Well, if played strategically, it is an excellent team sweeper with great tank elimination capabilities and a surprising amount of sustain.
Bonus Starter: Tuwai
This one is interesting since this is technically not a starter, but it is gotten around the same time as your starter free of cost. This Temtem resembles a Toucan bird with its bright, colorful beak and beautiful big eyes. This little guy is initially a simple Wind-type Temtem, but this changes later.
The exciting thing about this “starter” is its multiple evolutions entirely up to your choice. You could keep this Temtem as is, which is fine, but you could also evolve them into many different forms. In this regard, it is similar to Evee from the Pokemon franchise, which has multiple evolution forms depending on if certain conditions are met.
We will simply go over the move set and type charting to let you know, but this shouldn’t be your starter since this is acquired after the starter selection.
