The show and comics have a fair bit of complex characters, although, you still have your comically evil people just in case.
Even though The Boys parodies all of the famous superheroes, it also shows why these people are a certain way. Take Homelander, for example. The strongest Supe there is, he embodies a God complex, craving adoration and wielding his power with impunity. Yet, beneath the surface lies a deep-seated insecurity.
He crumbles when public opinion sours, revealing a child-like need for validation that exposes the vulnerability beneath the persona. The main focus of the TV show is a team of superheroes called The Seven, which is your not-so-average Justice League. However, that is not where the referencing stops, the shows a messed-up version of every famous superhero.
From a rich billionaire orphan by the name of Tek Knight to a masked vigilante Webweaver, the show has something for everyone. Imagine a video game where choices truly matter, with a branching storyline and a morality system that reflects the show’s exploration of the cost of fighting for what’s right.
There is already a gap in the superhero side of the video game industry, and The Boys may be something that gamers may need around the world.
The Gameplay Mechanics
The Boys is still quite new and fresh, which keeps the audience guessing and coming for more. This can allow the game developers to take any route they want with their property. Allowing you to either play as The Boys or become part of The Seven. Moreover, if you still want something else, the game could center around a new Supe starting around.
This would allow the game to become sort of an RPG, where character progression and meeting new characters would push the narrative forward. Maybe the player could even get strong enough to join The Seven. The game could even incorporate a Morality System like Fallout, where your actions can directly impact how people treat you.
However, in a game about Superheroes, the combat mechanics need to feel truly Super. The combat in The Boys wouldn’t be about flashy combos or power fantasy. It would be brutal and unforgiving, reflecting the show’s grounded take on superhero powers. However, a destructible environment would be essential to showcase the strength of the characters.
There could be a focus on close-quarters combat, with melee featuring improvised weapons and brutal takedowns. Think of a more visceral take on the Arkham series‘ combat, with the environment offering opportunities for environmental kills that echo the show’s gore.
Supe takedowns should require specific strategies. For regular characters, stealth and hit-and-run tactics would be crucial. Exploiting weaknesses and using gadgets like Butcher’s temporary Compound V injections could allow for temporary power boosts to take down even the strongest Supes.
Even though I may not be the biggest fan of the turned-based combat, it could work in this game setting. Imagine Midnight Suns or Baldur’s Gate 3 but with your favorite characters from The Boys
The Future Potential
For now, we have seen the character from The Boys pop up in several different games. We have seen Homelander and A-Train join the world of Call of Duty. Homelander also made his much-awaited appearance in the Mortal Kombat recently. This just shows how much people want to see these characters in a video game.
Furthermore, I do believe that the show does an exceptional job of world-building. However, we often do not get to see much outside The Boys or The Seven. The games could follow in the footsteps of Gen V, where a completely different story was presented from the TV show The Boys, still set in the same world.
Imagine building your team of normal humans to take down corrupt supes. This game could become what Suicide Squad Justice League wished it was. You would have just the right amount of humor and gore to get the players invested. Missions could range from infiltrating Vought headquarters and sabotaging PR campaigns to taking down rogue Supes terrorizing neighborhoods.
The Boys’ signature dark humor could be woven into side quests, with hilarious and disturbing situations reflecting the show’s satirical tone. So the game could be based on any of the interesting possibilities, but, it would need to respect the world and the rules of this world.
