Marvel hasn’t had the same luck with video games that they had with their Cinematic Universe. One of their most anticipated titles, Marvel’s Avengers, wasn’t exactly a fun experience.
Despite featuring a strong cast of characters, the game failed to engage the player base. However, it wasn’t all a failure for Marvel, as the Guardians of the Galaxy surprised players.
-
- The core Guardians team (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot) receives deep character development, hilarious team dynamics, and a strong emotional core.
- The story balances humor and heart, offering a fun space adventure with genuinely emotional moments and player choices that impact the narrative.
- This game features a diverse and detailed universe brimming with unique alien species, bustling space stations, and breathtaking vistas.
- The gameplay features fast-paced combat with unique character abilities and teamwork elements.
The band of misfits and the underdogs came to Marvel’s rescue yet again. Developed by Eidos Montreal, this game was released in 2021.
It keeps a laser-sharp focus on the single-player campaign and the characters in the story. The game truly captures the essence of what it is like to play as one of the Guardians, which never stops being fun.
Characters & Their Journey
The characters are the true main strength of Guardians of the Galaxy. Unlike Avengers, which attempted to handle a big roster, Guardians concentrates on a main group.
The team is exactly who you expect, Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. This makes better character development possible and creates funny team relationships.
The game does not take much divergence from the comic book inspirations. Start Lord is still the self-proclaimed leader of the group, Gamora is still the mysterious assassin, and Drax is still strong and dumb.
Moreover, Rocket, the quick-witted and foul-mouthed raccoon, still serves as the team’s tech expert and mechanic. While Groot still only says ‘I am Groot’.
In my opinion, this campaign serves as a very fun story. The story opens up with Guardians after a seemingly small bounty to clear out their debts. However, their actions get them tangled in a huge intergalactic conflict with universe-saving stakes.
The story’s main focus is still on Star-Lord and his time on Earth. As a result, the story constantly cuts between their cosmic adventure and Peter’s relationship with his Mom. This serves as a fresh break from the huge galactic story and grounds the character with emotions.
The story balances heart with genuinely funny moments, which is an amazing feat for a video game. The game also offers narrative choices to the players that can result in hilarious outcomes. There is a section where the Guardians have a choice of gifting either Groot or Rocket as a ferocious monster.
Let me just tell you, that one of these choices has an incredibly hilarious storyline.
The World Design
The setting of Guardians of the Galaxy is a treat for the eyes. Eidos Montreal has carefully designed a universe filled with different types of aliens, busy space stations, and stunning views. Players can go to many places such as Nova Corps territory with its neon-lit casinos or deserted remains from past civilizations.
Every setting carries its unique ambiance and aesthetic choices, filled with details that showcase the history of a place. In one instant, you may be wandering through the narrow alleys of our base planet, Knowhere. The next moment could find you moving along huge hallways within a religious cult’s spaceship.
This assortment keeps exploration engaging and visually captivating. The music collection also adds more enjoyment. It’s a winning formula of authorized 80s hits picked by Star-Lord, matched with new, scene-setting instrumental tracks.
Gameplay & The Single Player Focus
Guardians of the Galaxy smartly avoids the pitfalls of Marvel’s Avengers by focusing on a tight, single-player campaign. The developers completely ditch the live service model of Marvel’s Avengers and remove microtransactions from the game. This keeps the players engaged with the story and leads to smooth character progression.
The gameplay itself is a delightful mix of action-adventure and exploration. Combat is fast-paced and satisfying, with each Guardian offering unique combat styles.
Star-Lord can utilize elemental blasts alongside jet-boosted maneuvers, while Rocket unleashes a barrage of explosive gadgets. Additionally, Drax has mostly melee and stun abilities, while Groot is great at crowd control.
However, if you want to deal a great amount of damage to a single target, then you may call for Gamora. Players strategically issue commands to their teammates, turning these encounters into chaotic yet thrilling displays of teamwork.
During the times when you are not fighting, there is exploring environments, finding secrets, and solving light puzzles. Exploration will reward you with hidden items, and more information about the lore of the world.
The game does not push you quickly from one goal to another. Instead, it lets you fully experience the world and form real connections with its characters.
Experience It For Yourself
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy delivers a stellar single-player experience that breathes fresh air into the superhero genre. With its focus on character development, a vibrant world, and engaging gameplay, it’s a must-play for both Marvel fans and newcomers seeking a fun and heartfelt adventure.

I’m a Computer Science undergrad by day, and a gamer by… well, most of the rest of the time. Been around games forever, from the classics like CS 1.6 and Halo to the latest stuff like Valorant and Palworld. Competitive FPS is my jam, but you won’t catch me skipping a good campaign – Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us hold a special place in my heart. Outside of gaming, I’m a huge movie buff. Basically, I’m here to dissect the latest games, share some laughs about pop culture, and maybe even recommend a good film.
