Can A Video Game Be Better Than The Original Movie?

Wolverine has become one of the most popular superheroes of our time. Starting as part of the team of Mutants, the X-Men, Wolverine was nothing more than just a member. However, Hugh Jackman‘s portrayal of the mutant with Claws in the X-Men movies pushed the character to the heights of popularity.

Soon the raging Mutant with Adamantium Claws became so famous, that movie studios decided it was time for a solo Wolverine Movie. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine released in 2009, instantly became a contender for one of the worst Superhero origin movies.

Key Takeaways
  • Despite a bad movie, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game is a hidden gem for fans.
  • The game offers brutal, close-quarter combat that truly captures Wolverine’s ferocity.
  • The video game has a surprisingly better story than the movie, with additional content and a focus on character development.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (video game) may have flown under many fan’s radar. I mean video game adaptations of movies haven’t been super successful in the past. The fact that fans hated the movie further damaged the prospect of the video game getting any real fame. However, the people who tried the video game got their minds blown off.

The Wolverine game throws you headfirst into the raw brutality that defines the character. Gone are the sterilized punches and kicks of many superhero games. Here, Wolverine’s attacks are visceral and unforgiving. You’ll slash through enemies, leaving a trail of carnage in your wake.

The combat system perfectly captures Wolverine’s ferocity. Attacks feel weighty and impactful, with the satisfying crunch of metal meeting flesh. There’s a focus on close-quarters combat, forcing you to get up close and personal with your enemies – just like Wolverine prefers. However, one important thing to remember is that the game has multiple versions.

Here we are more focused on the next-gen version released on Xbox 360 with a mature rating.  Developed by Raven Software, the gameplay is brutal with Wolverine performing full-blown Fatalities on his enemies.

The focus on brutality isn’t just for show. It truly makes you feel like Wolverine. Every successful attack, every bone-shattering blow, reinforces the sense of raw power at your fingertips. It’s a truly immersive experience that captures the essence of what makes Wolverine such a compelling character.

A Better Story?

This may come as a surprise to a lot of fans, but, the video game was able to present a much more compelling story over the movie. While directly inspired by the film, the video game leveraged its extended playtime to delve far deeper into the world of mutants, presenting a richer narrative experience.

For most of the part, the story follows the movie’s story, with even exact scenes being played out. However, there is plenty of additional content added to the video game narrative. One of my favorite parts from the gameplay has to be Logan’s fight against a Sentinel.

While the Sentinels wouldn’t make their big screen debut until X-Men: Days of Future Past, they have been a long part of the X-Men comics. I was genuinely surprised to find a Sentinel during my campaign and thoroughly enjoyed the boss fight against the large comic-accurate villain.

I do understand why Sentinels weren’t added to the movie and I appreciate the game developers for including a fight in the campaign. The narrative is mature, reflecting the darker aspects of Wolverine’s world. It delves into themes of loss, memory, and the struggle for identity. This resonates with players who crave a more complex superhero experience.

The story also benefits from its smaller scale. Unlike some superhero games that juggle world-ending threats, The Wolverine game focuses on a more personal conflict. This allows for a deeper exploration of Logan’s character and the emotional stakes involved.

Logan’s Future

Insomniac Wolverine Game

Even if you have yet to try the classic Wolverine game, I would still consider this a great time to be a Wolverine Fan. The upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine brought out retired Hugh Jackman to play Wolverine once more. The Insomniac games are also developing a next-gen Wolverine game. These are the same developers behind the critically acclaimed Spider-Man games.

With their experience in crafting immersive superhero experiences, fans can expect a next-gen Wolverine title that truly captures the character’s essence. Imagine the brutality of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine gameplay combined with the intricate storytelling and world-building of Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles, that’s the potential this new Wolverine game holds.

One thing’s for sure, with a talented developer like Insomniac at the helm of the upcoming game and the character’s enduring popularity, Wolverine’s future seems guaranteed for a slice of adamantium-laced success.
